Flooring is a blanket term to describe a permanent floor covering or the process of installing a smooth, durable and impenetrable leveled bottom surface. This surface, or floor, should be hard and strong enough to take a beating. All floor consists of mainly two components:

The floor base
This bottom level is made up of layers of diverse materials. The purpose is to provide a sturdy surface for the floor covering. The area is first filled with soil that is watered and jam packed. A layer of broken bricks or boulders is crowded together over the soil. Then, a layer of cement concrete is laid down and smoothed out into a level surface, ready for the floor covering. A ground floor, first floor, second floor, etc., and a roof slab are each considered a floor base.
The floor covering
The floor name is determined by the material used to make the floor covering. Frequently used components that get placed over the floor base include mosaic, marble, tiles, hardwood, etc. Several factors determine which flooring material will be used as a covering. Most commonly concrete flooring is used in most homes. But the modern trend in houses is marble, tile or PVC flooring.
Learn about floor coverings before making a decision
A flooring project is one of the biggest renovations you can make in your house. It is also one of the most expensive endeavors with an estimated cost ranging in the tens of thousands depending on the type of flooring. The investment will be significant whether you make it a do-it-yourself home improvement project, or if you outsource. Do a lot of research on floor coverings before beginning this venture to avoid any expensive mistakes.

Review the pluses and minuses of each flooring type
No matter which type you choose, thoroughly understand the pros and cons of your flooring options. Be certain the product you have installed is perfect for space. Make practical decisions, like not putting down carpeting a bathroom or a kitchen. Also, a floor covering like a tile wouldn’t be so warm and cozy in a bedroom. Put a lot of thought into how you use the room and what flooring type would make the most sense in it. Once you have made a clear decision, it is time to choose your flooring.

What are the advantages of engineered hardwoods?
There are so may flooring materials to choose from, in addition to those previously mentioned you might also consider carpet, vinyl or engineered hardwoods or laminates. Engineered hardwood, is a thinner layer of wood laminated to fiberboard, plywood, or some other backing. This provides the look and durability of authentic hardwood with more protection against moisture. It is also much less expensive.

Laminate flooring is made out of layers of artificial materials such as plastic, fiberboard, and other materials. It is usually produced to imitate the look and feel of natural wood without any of the issues that go along with it, like the high price and weight.
